Meeting of the U.S.-Vietnam Working Group on the Acceptance of the Return of Vietnamese Citizens

HANOI, July 07, 2017 – The United States and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam held the first meeting of the bilateral Working Group on the Acceptance of the Return of Vietnamese Citizens on July 5. As outlined in the Joint Statement for Enhancing the Comprehensive Partnership between the United States of America and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Working Group was established by Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and President Donald Trump on May 31.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security hosted the working group, with participation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Office of the Government. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State represented the United States.

The two governments held an initial discussion on a wide range of issues related to the return of Vietnamese citizens subject to final orders of removal from the United States. Both sides intend to continue discussions at a future date.
