Lisa Wishman, Press Officer, U.S. Embassy

Join Michael Mosettig, former editor and senior producer for foreign affairs and defense at the Public Broadcasting Service’s NewHour and Online NewsHour, for a discussion about the way in which media shapes the political process. Have you heard of President Sadat’s visit to Israel? The Tet Offensive? How about President Nixon’s visit to China? Maybe the Iranian Hostage Crisis or Tiananmen Square? If you have, you know the media plays a large role in the way in which the public responds to the “big events” as they unfold; if you haven’t, you need to come hear about these pivotal events from a skilled and seasoned journalist who has lived through and reported about them. U.S. Embassy Press Officer Lisa Wishman will host a chat with Mike and you’ll also have a chance to ask him questions, so prepare some in advance.

Many Vietnamese are interested in studying in the United States or in working with American companies and NGOs, where an understanding of American values and how they are applied in the study and work environment will help avoid intercultural misunderstandings. This session will focus both on directly and indirectly observed cultural behaviors, how the history of the U.S. has shaped American cultural values, and how these values may be interpreted in academic environments and in the workplace. Participants will have the opportunity to share their own ideas and experiences and to identify challenges and offer solutions in interacting with Americans.
