All events take place at 1st Floor of the Rose Garden Tower at 170 Ngoc Khanh Street, Hanoi, except those noted otherwise. Remember to bring your ID with you. Members of the media are welcome to attend public events at the American Center. However, if you intend to being in still or video cameras‎, please contact the Media Team at least 24 hours in advance so we can determine whether the speaker is comfortable and, if so, request security access for your equipment. Lisa, a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, has served in Tel Aviv, Israel; Ottawa, Canada; and Washington, D.C. After having studied Vietnamese in Hanoi for 11 months, she assumed her position as the Embassy’s press officer in August 2014 and will remain in Vietnam through summer 2016. She looks forward to getting to know you better.

Exploring Recovery in Addiction

The session “Exploring Recovery in Addiction”, jointly done by the medical staff and methadone patients, will illustrate the key concepts of addiction as a disease and methadone is the medication needed for their recovery. “Exploring Recovery in Addiction” also helps audience to understand the important roles of other support the patients needed to support their long term recovery and be the productive members of the community and family as well as to reduce stigma and discrimination against the individuals with substance use disorders.

A Cell Phone Game that can Transform Your Classroom

A recently-created classroom teaching tool transformed the speaker’s high school classroom last year. It woke up students who had been previously bored.  For this game, teachers need to have a projector and at least half the students in the class must have a cell phone. You’ll have a chance to play one game, then hear about how to use it for classroom discussions, teaching, and assessment. Mostly, you’ll have fun.

Film Show and Discussion: Châu, Beyond the Lines (2015)

Join us for a special screening of the documentary that was nominated for Oscar 2016! It is a great story that transcends the past. Châu and the other kids in the center are coming of age — looking to the future while overcoming the present.  Hear from the filmmakers and Châu himself, who will join us virtually before the screening.  And then, after the screening, join in the discussion about disability, disability assistance and capacity building.

Vietnam Forests and Deltas Program (VFD): Climate Change and Changing Lives

The VFD program is working with leaders and communities in the forest areas of Nghe An and Thanh Hoa and the delta areas of Nam Dinh and Long An. Climate change is forcing people to adapt to new challenges in these areas, including increased storms, less freshwater, and lower productivity of traditional crops. Find out what people are doing to change their lives and how forests and natural resources are helping them adapt.

Rice: White Gold or Poverty Trap?

Air Quality

The U.S. Embassy in Hanoi recently installed an air quality monitor which transmits local air pollution information to the public through EPA’s AirNow.gov platform.  Come meet Adam Eisele, a Science Fellow from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, who will discuss our monitor and its measurement:  the Air Quality Index, a valuable tool in determining how clean or polluted the air is on a given day, hour-by-hour.
