AC Hanoi's Events for the Public

All of the below events are open free of charge to the public. We would like you to plan carefully before registering with us so that we have enough seats for participants. If you register for our events but change your plan, kindly notify us by email. If you would like to be an American Center member, please register.

All events take place at 1st Floor of the Rose Garden Tower at 170 Ngoc Khanh Street, Hanoi, except those noted otherwise. Remember to bring your ID with you. Members of the media are welcome to attend public events at the American Center. However, if you intend to being in still or video cameras‎, please contact the Media Team at least 24 hours in advance so we can determine whether the speaker is comfortable and, if so, request security access for your equipment. Please note that not all speakers will want to be filmed and interviewed. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.

Please Note: In the American Center (AC), we usually record, film and photograph our programs and activities to promote the AC and the work the U.S. Embassy does in Vietnam. We regularly use and post these images on our social media platforms. When participating in American Center programs, you provide your tacit consent for your image to be used in this way. Conversation Hour

Call it a conversation, or any one of this word’s synonyms – chat, colloquy, converse, dialog, discussion, etc. – this is an hour of informal talk and your opportunity to improve your English speaking and listening skills. Come join our American English Club to improve your English speaking skills and enhance your English vocabularies on variety of topics. This club is also a good chance for you to meet new friends and enjoy lot of fun games, discussions and activities.

The goal of the American Center’s Debate Club is to create friendly environment where anyone can express and freely debate their ideas on interesting current topics. So if you like to analyze facts, communicates openly, or just interested in debate please make your way to the AC to join our club.

Pronunciation Workshop

Thursdays, 11:30 – 1:00 midday

This 12-week pronunciation course focuses on the pronunciation features of American English and will help students improve their awareness and production of various aspects of pronunciation. Topics include consonant and vowel sounds, stress, intonation, rhythm, and problem areas for Vietnamese speakers of English. Please bring a friend to come join our first session on March 16, 2017.

Family Matters Television Hour

Please come join Curtis Johnson at the American Center’s new series of American television shows Black-ish. With each session consisting of 30-minute episode followed by 30-minute discussion, this program series focuses on African American culture and English Language.

Dre Johnson has it all: a great job, a beautiful wife, Rainbow, four kids and a big home in a classy neighborhood, but as a black man, he begins to question whether all his success has brought too much cultural assimilation for his family. With the help of his mother and father, Dre begins to try to create a sense of ethnic identity for the members of his family that will allow them to honor their background while preparing them to embrace the future.

American English Club: Intellectual Property

Come join our American English Club and bring your friends as we participate in exciting activities on the topic of Intellectual Property! We will warm up the program, in the beginning, with several musical performances of popular tunes like Westlife’s Open Your Heart. After that, the Club will let the audience join in a variety of discussions and role-playing sessions, which will improve your English speaking skills, enhance your vocabulary and have a tons of laughter throughout the program!

Becoming a Persuader: How to Use English To Get People To Do What You Want

Have you ever tried to convince someone to do something for you? Have you ever tried to change someone’s opinion on a topic or issue? How did that work out for you? Changing someone’s mind or getting their support might seem like a difficult, daunting task – however, it is actually quite simple! In this session, you can learn the essential tools to speaking and writing persuasively in English. Surprisingly, all you need to know are three easy steps! The audience will learn how to use the three Aristotelian proofs of ethos, pathos, and logos, to make a persuasive argument.

Olivia Franklin is a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant at Nguyen Trai Gifted High School in Hai Duong City. She has lived in Vietnam for over eight months. Last May, she graduated from The George Washington University in Washington, DC, with a dual degree in History and Communication. She loves discussing communication theories with people, and was a teaching assistant for a Communication class in college that focused on persuasive speaking. Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Olivia loves to spend her free time traveling, writing, running half marathons, going to the beach, and practicing yoga.

APEC 101: Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation

Environmental Protection Presentation

James Kendall, Founder of Keep Hanoi Clean

To celebrate Earth Day, James Kendall, an American environmentalist living in Hanoi and Founder of Keep Hanoi Clean, will share his group’s experiences of inspiring thousands of followers to clean up Hanoi’s canals and roadside dumps to keep Hanoi’s public places clean. Come to learn the inside stories about Hanoi, get inspired and find out what you can do to protect our environment.

Business Communication: How to Properly Communicate in a Professional Setting

Would you ever say “what’s up?” to your boss? Probably not! The English we use in day-to-day conversations is very different from the English used in a professional business setting. In this session, the audience will learn how to communicate both conversationally and through email with co-workers. The Do’s and Don’t’s of English Business Communication will be discussed.

Boundless Form: Historical Origins and Jazz Philosophy

Come join Daniel McCullough for a discussion on historical and cultural factors that created the conditions for the emergence of Jazz as a musical genre in the United State. The speaker will discuss his views on Jazz as a way to cultivate an innovative state of mind. Also you will have a chance to listen to some examples of Jazz recording and two tunes live from our speaker.
