20th Anniversary Celebration in August 2015 – Civil Society/Rule of Law

Threaded though the entirety of our engagement with Vietnam are the priorities of respect for human rights and the rule of law.  In August, the Embassy continued to engage with the Government of Vietnam as it works to implement legal reform to ensure its laws comply with its 2013 Constitution and obligations under international covenants.  Two senior visits highlighted engagement on this front – Secretary of State John Kerry and U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.  During his visit, the Secretary emphasized that in order to fulfill the promise and potential of our Comprehensive Partnership, Vietnam needs to continue to demonstrate concrete progress on human rights.  Justice Ginsburg’s visit, which included meetings with the Prime Minister and Chief Justice of the Supreme People’s Court, focused on legal and judicial reform in Vietnam.  The Justice was accompanied by her daughter, Professor Dr. Jane Ginsburg.  One of the highlights of the visit occurred when the two of them presided over a moot court competition consisting of two teams of law students.
