U.S. Embassy Hanoi and U.S. Consulate General Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (May 28, 2020)
This is an update from the U.S. Embassy Hanoi and Consulate General Ho Chi Minh City to assist U.S. citizens in remaining informed during the evolving Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation in Vietnam.
Important Information for U.S. Citizens:
On May 27, the Vietnamese immigration authorities clarified information previously released in local media regarding Resolution 79/NQ-CP, which announced that, effective July 1, the citizens of 80 countries, including the United States, will be eligible for electronic visas and access to additional points of entry in Vietnam. The resolution was issued to support a previously passed amendment that supplemented Vietnam’s Law on Entry, Exit, Transit, and Residence of Foreigners, but does not lift the current suspensions on Vietnamese visa issuance and entry restrictions implemented by the Government of Vietnam in response to the COVID-19 situation. The U.S. Embassy Hanoi and Consulate General Ho Chi Minh City remind U.S. citizens that the Vietnamese government has not lifted its suspension on the entry of foreigners, including persons with a Vietnamese visa exemption certificate, in place since March 22. The Vietnamese government has not announced a change in policy from its suspension of visa issuance effective March 18. Although there are limited exemptions for diplomatic, official duty, and special cases as determined by the Government of Vietnam, such exemptions are rare and additional health restrictions still apply for any foreign traveler in an exempted category allowed to enter Vietnam by local immigration authorities. These restrictions include a mandatory two-week quarantine period and COVID-19 testing. We are unable to estimate when these suspensions will be lifted and cannot assist U.S. citizens in requesting exemptions from Vietnamese government regulations.
U.S. Embassy Hanoi and Consulate General Ho Chi Minh City remind U.S. citizens that the U.S. Department of State’s Global 4 Health Advisory still applies, and U.S. citizens are advised to avoid all international travel unless absolutely necessary. U.S. citizens can check our Information for U.S. Citizens on Visas for Vietnam page for information on current visa-related measures and entry restrictions taken by the Government of Vietnam in response to COVID-19. We also recommend U.S. citizens check the Embassy’s COVID-19 page daily for information, and register or update their information in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).
