Public Health Emergency Response in the United States
Time: Wednesday, August 3, 1:00 – 2:00pm
Speaker:  Stephen Redd, MD, Director of Public Health Preparedness and Response at U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
In 2016 thus far, U.S. CDC’s Emergency Operations Center has been activated to respond to Ebola, Zika, Polio, and the Flint, Michigan Water Contamination.  In this informal discussion, Dr. Redd, Director of CDC’s Public Health Response, will share background about current public health concerns, explain how the United State Government responses to outbreaks, and share lessons learned as Vietnam looks to strengthens its emergency response.  Public health professionals, students, general interested public, and media are all welcome and invited to attend.     

Internet of Things (IoT) and the Connected World

We live in a world that offers ubiquitous connectivity between people, machines and data. Service providers are marketing technologies such as LTE and Wi-Fi, increasing their network coverage and signal strength, and promoting new services such as the “Internet of things,” cloud computing and smart cars. This talk describes what these technologies offer, how network quality is provided, and where the telecommunications market is headed.

Dealing in Desire: Intimacy and Economic Transactions

Speaker: Assistant Professor Kimberly Kay Hoang, University of Chicago
Come join Professor Hoang’s discussion about how physical intimacy has become a vital form of currency in the economic relations of Vietnam on its global stage.  She will discuss her book “Dealing in Desire: Asian Ascendancy, Western Decline, and the Hidden Currencies of Global Sex Work” and examine the interconnections of high finance, charitable giving to sex workers, and the intimate spheres of the informal economy. To write her book, sociologist Kimberly Kay Hoang worked as a bartender and hostess for five years in Ho Chi Minh City. The result is an ethnographic study of the stratified sex industry, taking an in-depth and often personal look at sex workers and their clients.
