This lecture will chart the historical and contemporary relationship between African American and Vietnamese people. It will trace efforts by African American activists to reach out to the Vietnamese government in the 1960’s as well as their work in Vietnam. In addition, it will discuss coalitions between Vietnamese Americans in the diaspora and Black communities in the United States during this time and beyond as a part of wider efforts for equality. Also, it will examine and challenge some of the obstacles to this relationship; such as colorism, nativism and anti-Black racism.

MOOC Camp: English for Media Literacy

The American Center will host five-week discussion sessions for the MOOC Camp English for Media Literacy. Offered by University of Pennsylvania and funded by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Office of English Language Programs, this course is designed for non-native English speakers who are interested in learning more about U.S. media literacy. In this course, you will explore different types of mass media, such as newspapers, magazines, television, and social media. This course will also give you the opportunity to develop a broader understanding of the role media plays in our lives, while building your vocabulary and giving you the language skills needed to analyze what you read and watch.

The interactive talk also gives you context for thinking about dystopian fiction— its structure, historical background in Western literature, common themes, and how it differs from apocalyptic fiction. Fundamentals of Essay Writing (Please RSVP)

In this workshop, you will learn about some fundamental elements for writing a persuasive essay, including preparation, developing a thesis, and writing strong arguments based on compelling evidence. Participants will receive some feedback and coaching if they bring a copy of a short essay (500-words or less) to the workshop. Bring your friends and a writing sample! (A laptop is recommended but not required).
