Would you like to know what’s in the U.S. news? Would you like to chat with the U.S. Embassy’s Press Officer Lisa Bess Wishman? If so, please plan to join her at the American Center on the first Wednesday of every month from 3:30 – 4:30. Lisa, a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, has served in Tel Aviv, Israel; Ottawa, Canada; and Washington, D.C. After having studied Vietnamese in Hanoi for 11 months, she assumed her position as the Embassy’s press officer in August 2014 and will remain in Vietnam through summer 2016. She looks forward to getting to know you better.
Creative Writing Club

For students interested in fiction, poetry and other forms of creative writing, the American Center is piloting a Creative Writing Club. The club will meet once a week, for five weeks, and will give all participants a chance to express themselves through their writing. With the help of your instructor, an award-winning American novelist, you will learn both how to be a more thoughtful writer and also a more critical reader. Every student will be expected to write at least one short story (or long poem) during the course of the club. In order to get the most benefit out of the club, we also ask that every participant commit to attending all 5 sessions.

International Day of the Girl 2015 – The Power of the Adolescent Girl: Vision for 2030

How can girls be an equal partner in solving the problems of climate change, economic growth, and global sustainability? Join the discussion with Helaina Matza and the Girl Scouts of America Overseas Troop in Hanoi as they share their environmental vision for 2030. Helaina will draw upon on her expertise in air quality measurement as a means towards monitoring environmental concerns. Discussion will reflect on how far we have come, but how much more there is to do to reach our vision for 2030 – and that there is a place for girls to be part of that process.

What are the political sources of risk and uncertainty in underdevelopment? In developed societies, a broad range of institutions reduces economic risks that may hinder growth. Institutions that facilitate risk sharing are scarce in developing societies. Compared to their counterparts in developed nations, people in emerging nations spend much more time, money and effort acquiring necessary information about potential trading partners and opportunities for investment. The risks faced by one are not connected to those faced by others, so the law of large numbers cannot be used, thus mutual gains from cooperation rarely materialize. Poverty reflects deep uncertainties in society, as people cannot frame the most basic functions of their lives or of their actions toward the future.
Women Champions in Construction Industry

Operation Game Change – Youth for Protecting Wildlife

Youth have an essential in indispensable role in global and domestic efforts to combat wildlife trafficking, and nowhere is this more true than in Vietnam. In this event, join our special guests from the U.S. – wildlife champions and founders of One More Generation; and from South Africa – young Rhino Ambassadors selected for their leadership, activism against rhino poaching and participation in the 2014 and 2015 World Youth Rhino Summits. They will be speaking about their personal experiences of the rhino poaching crisis, and the World Youth Wildlife Declaration, a world-wide call to action from young people against rhino poaching and all other forms of wildlife crime.
