Promoting English language teaching in Dak Nong Province, Vietnam

English Language Fellows Catherine Bolster and Christina Massey interacting with workshop participants.

On Feb. 27 and 28, English Language Fellows, Catherine Bolster and Christina Massey traveled to Dak Nong province to train teachers and students at Nguyen Chi Thanh Gifted High School. On the first day, the two English Language Fellows worked with eight teachers on new methods for teaching speaking and writing in the English language classroom, including new activities for cooperative learning. The teachers enjoyed learning hands-on strategies that will improve their students’ English speaking skills. On the second day, Catherine worked with thirty gifted English students in their last two years of high school. They practiced public speaking skills and learned about using figurative language in writing. The students were a fantastic audience and participated in the activities with enthusiasm, creativity, and thoughtfulness. This successful workshop is the first English language training outreach supported by the U.S. Consulate General to a high school in the Central Highlands of Vietnam.
