We ask that all eligible U.S. citizen adults renew their passports (Form DS-82) by mail or appointment free drop-off and pay the passport renewal fee online, via Pay.gov. Please visit our Renew Passports by Postal Mail or Express Drop-Off website to see if you are eligible to use Form DS-82 and renew your passport by mail or appointment-free drop-off. If you are eligible to renew by mail or appointment-free drop-off, you do not need to make an appointment.
If you do not meet the criteria to renew by mail or appointment-free drop-off, you must instead schedule an appointment to submit an application in person at either the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi or Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City. Once you have scheduled an appointment, please print out the confirmation page for access to our office on the appointment date. If there are no slots available in the Appointment System, please go back to the system at a later time. Appointment slots are opened approximately two weeks in advance, and additional slots are often added, so we recommend you check the system periodically for availability.
Please also note that passport cards cannot be renewed by postal mail. If you meet all the requirements to renew your passport by postal mail as listed on our Renew Passports by Postal Mail or Express Drop-Off page, but you wish to renew both a passport book and card, please complete Form DS-82 and book an appointment to submit your passport book and card renewal application in person at either the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi or Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City.
ATTENTION: If your most recent full validity passport was issued within the last 15 years and when you were age 16 or over, and the passport you are submitting is not damaged, you do not need to make an appointment. Please follow the instructions on our Renew Passports by Postal Mail website.
Otherwise, you will need to complete Form DS-11 and schedule an appointment.
When you arrive at our office, you will be served according to your appointment time. If your application is approved, you will need to fill out a return delivery courier slip (available at our office) to arrange for delivery of your passport by courier service. Please note that you will pay for this delivery service in cash directly to the EMS courier service at the U.S. Embassy/ Consulate General during your appointment. We forward all approved passport applications to the United States for processing, and the Department of State returns all printed passports to Vietnam. This process takes approximately two-to-three weeks, with passport book-and-card applications taking up to six weeks for both products to arrive in Vietnam. We strongly encourage you to apply for a passport well before any planned travel, even if your passport is still valid. You can check on the status of your passport application here. If it has been more than three weeks since the application date and you have not received any notification, you are welcome to contact us here. In your inquiry, please state clearly that you have waited more than three weeks from the passport application date.
If we cannot approve your passport application during your initial visit, the consular officer will provide you with detailed information about what is needed to continue the processing of your application.
Appointments for American Citizen Services are free (no cost). If you wish to report fraudulent activity related to any of the Consular services we provide, please contact our Consular Fraud Prevention Unit atHanoiFPU@state.gov (for Hanoi) or HCMCFPU@state.gov (for Ho Chi Minh City).
In order to be fair to applicants, our office only consider expedite requests when there is an urgent need to travel due to an extreme emergency. 1) the reason your case is an extreme emergency and you must have an earlier appointment,
