Important!
With the exception of emergency services, all U.S. citizen services must schedule an appointment in advance. If you have urgent travel plans and must request an emergency passport, please visit the Request an Emergency Passport page.
If your passport book or passport card is lost or stolen, you are advised to report the loss/theft to the local Vietnamese police in the area in which it occurred and also via the Department State’s website HERE.
To replace your lost/stolen passport, please CLICK HERE to make an appointment for “Passport services other than adding pages” and bring the required documents listed below to replace your lost/stolen passport at either the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi or the U.S. Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City. Passports reported lost or stolen are invalidated and can no longer be used for travel. Once you have scheduled an appointment, please print out the confirmation page for access to our office on the appointment date. If there are no slots available in the Appointment System, please go back to the system at a later time. Appointment slots are opened approximately two weeks in advance, and additional slots are often added, so we recommend you check the system periodically for availability.
When you arrive at our office, you will be served according to your appointment time. If your application is approved, you will need to fill out a return delivery courier slip (available at our office) to arrange for delivery of your passport by courier service. Please note that you will pay for this delivery service in cash directly to the EMS courier service at the U.S. Embassy/ Consulate General during your appointment. We forward all approved passport applications to the United States for processing, and the Department of State returns all printed passports to Vietnam. This process takes approximately two-to-three weeks, with passport book-and-card applications taking up to six weeks for both products to arrive in Vietnam. We strongly encourage you to apply for a passport well before any planned travel, even if your passport is still valid. You can check on the status of your passport application here. If it has been more than three weeks since the application date and you have not received any notification, you are welcome to contact us here. In your inquiry, please state clearly that you have waited more than three weeks from the passport application date.
If we cannot approve your passport application during your initial visit, the consular officer will provide you with detailed information about what is needed to continue the processing of your application.
Appointments for American Citizen Services are free (no cost). If you wish to report fraudulent activity related to any of the Consular services we provide, please contact our Consular Fraud Prevention Unit at HanoiFPU@state.gov (for Hanoi) or HCMCFPU@state.gov (for Ho Chi Minh City).
In order to be fair to applicants, our office only consider expedite requests when there is an urgent need to travel due to an extreme emergency. If you need to request an expedited appointment, you must first schedule a regular appointment as instructed above (If no appointment slots are available for you to schedule, please explain clearly in your inquiry.) After successfully scheduling an appointment, you must visit our Inquiry Form to submit an expedite request. Please include:
1) the reason your case is an extreme emergency and you must have an earlier appointment,
2) the date and time of your scheduled appointment (If no appointment slots are available for you to schedule, please explain clearly in your inquiry) and the date and time of your preferred appointment if your request is approved, and
3) attach evidence of your emergency situation or an explanation why an earlier appointment will help you resolve your emergency situation.
If you do not provide ALL the information listed above, your request will not be considered.
