Health Alert – U.S. Embassy Hanoi and Consulate General Ho Chi Minh City – Reports of Extended Quarantine Beyond Fourteen Days (February 9, 2021)
Event: U.S. Embassy Hanoi and Consulate General Ho Chi Minh City have received reports of Vietnamese authorities extending quarantine periods for Vietnamese and foreign citizens by up to one or two weeks. Due to recent outbreaks, Vietnamese authorities may extend quarantine periods beyond 14 days without prior notice. U.S. citizens considering travel to or within Vietnam, especially from locations the Vietnamese government has designated or determines to be “outbreak areas,” including Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, may be subject to testing, quarantine, and lockdowns, sometimes with little or no advance notice. The U.S. Embassy Hanoi and Consulate General Ho Chi Minh City cannot intervene in the quarantine rules established by the Vietnamese government, and may not issue any documentation requesting the Vietnamese government to amend or waive quarantine requirements for U.S. citizens. For further details, please see: “Question: What can you do for me if I’m forced into quarantine?” in our frequently asked questions page here.
U.S. citizens currently in or with plans to travel to Ho Chi Minh City are informed that the Government of Vietnam has requested nonessential businesses to close starting at 12 p.m. on February 9, 2021. Earlier on February 4, Hanoi’s government issued Directive 03/CT-UBND suspending festivals, religious ceremonies, sports tournaments, and large events; the Directive also advises residents only to leave their houses when necessary, practice social distancing, and wear face masks in public places. Hanoi previously announced the closure of all nightclubs and karaoke lounges starting February 1 and of all video gaming centers and internet service centers starting February 2. Other cities and provinces in Vietnam may implement similar measures with little notice.
The U.S. Embassy Hanoi and Consulate General Ho Chi Minh City encourage U.S. citizens to abide by all Government of Vietnam directives, including mask wearing, social distancing, and hand washing guidelines. U.S. citizens should refrain from gathering in large groups and monitor local news and government restrictions to avoid travel disruptions.
U.S. citizens are reminded that they are subject to Vietnamese laws and regulations while in Vietnam and that the Government of Vietnam’s regulations regarding quarantine and travel restrictions in all parts of Vietnam can change on short notice.
