HANOI, March 08, 2022 – On January 19, 2022, a fugitive wanted in the United States by the Forks Township Police Department in Easton, Pa., for sexual assault of a minor under age 11, was returned to the United States from Vietnam and arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The fugitive, 65-year-old Michael P. Boumal, had been wanted since 2012. U.S. officials recently located Boumal in Hanoi, after learning that he had overstayed his Vietnam visa by two years. The Diplomatic Security Service (DSS), Assistant Regional Security Officer- Investigations worked quickly with Vietnamese immigration authorities, the Hanoi police, and the Forks Township Police Department to secure Boumal’s return to the United States. Boumal’s arrest serves as a reminder that U.S. law enforcement will never stop seeking criminals who improperly attempt to use other countries as sanctuaries.
DSS special agents at the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi and in Washington, D.C., along with the USMS and host-nation law enforcement agencies, were all instrumental in the return of Boumal.
