With support from the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (U.S. CDC) has implemented the first training of its kind in Vietnam to improve the design and quality of medical laboratory space.
“A comprehensive planning and design process can greatly improve the effectiveness and safety of laboratory facilities. This leads to improved quality of laboratory management and public health results. A well-planned facility can also reduce overall laboratory costs by providing efficient designs and systems that are maintainable and appropriate for local conditions,” said lead trainer Steve Milby, a laboratory design expert from the U.S. CDC Asset Management Services Office.
Over 80 participants from the Vietnam Ministry of Health, private architectural firms that specialize in laboratory design, architecture and engineering universities, and laboratory managers from the Pasteur Institute and the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology attended the trainings held in Hanoi and HCMC.
Participants of the training gained a better understanding of a variety of laboratory planning and design topics, including: basic principles and methods of laboratory planning, design, and construction, guidelines and standards that are critical to laboratory safety and sustainability, and budget development.
