Vinh Long, November 16, 2017 – Yesterday, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) marked the completion of the Mekong Vitality Expanded Alliance (MVE). Implemented by Pact, MVE is a public-private partnership between USAID, Coca-Cola and Experian that supports women’s microenterprise development and business leadership in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta Region. Until now, nearly 8,000 women in Vinh Long province have been socially and economically empowered through the Alliance.
Launched in July 2014, MVE has established more than 330 microfinance savings groups, which provided loans to women in the province who wanted to start a new business or expand their small businesses in order to generate more income. The project delivered business skills training, improved linkages to trade and markets, and used mobile technology training to support women-led savings and loan groups that empower female entrepreneurs.
MVE has equipped women in Vinh Long province with an understanding of sound business practices, market forces, and trade-related opportunities, which has enabled them to access market information and use that information to seize more business opportunities. Participating women have also had opportunities to support one another by sharing their experiences, providing loans, and receiving business coaching.
In addition, MVE also selected 400 women to receive advanced training in microenterprise development and business leadership skills in Vinh Long province which resulted in the creation or expansion of 245 small businesses. One of every three women participating in the Alliance created a new market linkage with at least one other business owner, such as new suppliers with diversified products and better prices, or more retailers in order to grow their own businesses.
“The Mekong Vitality Expanded Alliance has achieved impressive results. I am pleased that the project has contributed to Vietnam’s goal of empowering women,” said USAID/Vietnam Mission Director Michael Greene.
